OUR HISTORY
Oklahoma City was founded in 1889 during the Land Run, An event that saw some 10,000 homesteaders lay claim to the previously unsettled lands that would eventually become the state capital. It would soon become the county seat of Oklahoma County. The Oklahoma City stockyards employed a large number of people in the early 20th century. Oil was discovered within the city limits in 1928, leading to a major industrial boom. The establishment of the Interstate Highway System and Tinker Air Force Base further solidified Oklahoma City as a commercial hub.

On average, Oklahoma City enjoys 231 days of sunshine each year. Average high temperatures in July climb to 92 degrees, while January lows fall to around 24. Annual rainfall is approximately 30 inches, and yearly snow accumulation is just under three inches.

Oklahoma City Public Schools operates 55 elementary schools, 17 secondary schools, four alternative learning centers and 13 charter schools serving roughly 43,000 students throughout the metro. Area students can continue their education at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma City University, the University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma Christian University or Texas Christian University. The University of Oklahoma operates numerous institutions of higher learning throughout the city as well, most notably OU Medicine and University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
